Depart from Sarlat and drive 1 hour over the Dordogne boarder to the Lot Valley. The landscape changes dramatically to wind sheered, bushy, scrubby green oak trees where they find the famous Black Truffles of the region.
Rocamadour is a stunning cliff top village, an important pilgrimage destination for 1000 years. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the pilgrim route of the 'Way of Saint James', an ancient pilgrimage route to Santiago De Compostella in Spain. Rocamadour is one of Frances most important tourist destinations. We wander through the maze of cliff-side churches and chapels, and discover the sites religious significance.
Built on the site of a shrine to a Black Madonna, the shrine became famous for its healing powers.
We continue to drive via the beautiful villages of Loubressac and Carennac and have lunch at wonderful local French Auberge in the countryside, in a village more or less only known to locals, before returning to Sarlat.

Tour from medieval Sarlat and visit famous gourmet markets. Just a few Kilometres away we visit and learn of the rich history of the Templer Knights as we visit the fortified town of Domme. From here we have the most spectacular panoramic view over the Dordogne river valley below.
Lunch in a local restaurant right on the banks of the Dordogne river at Vitrac. After lunch a visit to a secret private monolithic 13th Century Chapel, hidden in a forest carved into the limestone cliffs.
We continue through the valley to visit the most photographed village in the region, La Roc Gageac, with its spectacular Trogdolyte village. Finally, we drift down the Dordogne river onboard a traditional wooden Gabarre and admire the majestic châteaux that looms over the river.
A 40 minute drive just north of Sarlat in the town of Montignac are the internationally renowned collection of prehistoric cave paintings of Lascaux. Each tour of the complex is approx 2 hours .Lascaux iv is a spectacular new centre with a replica of the famous decorated caves . Discovered in 1940 by 4 local teenage boys, who followed their dog into a narrow entrance to a cavern. The 15,000- to 17,000-year-old paintings, consisting mostly of animal representations, are among the finest examples of art from the Upper Paleolithic period. The colours of the walls are absolutely gorgeous, deep red, rich ochre and black being the dominant tints. The paintings depict over 900 animals deer, horses, cows, a woolly rhinoceros & bison. A beautiful brand new stunning replica of the art works are housed in an enormous museum of prehistory opened in November 2017.

The Return drive to Sarlat is via the pretty river side towns of Condat sur Vezere, St Amand De Coly with its fortified church.
More than any other French region, the Dordognes fertile landscapes offer an unparalleled and glorious array of gardens. The settings lend themselves to picturesque parks, their properties surrounded by drifts of wonderful flowers, often guarded by clipped and coiffed topiary masterpieces. While many of the gardens are truly historic, there are also some fine examples of contemporary design and planting – in effect, something to suit all tastes. Departing from Sarlat we visit Le Manoir d’Eyrignac a master class in the art of topiary. Other gardens that we may visit are those of Cadiot a huge array of flowers and gardens at la Chartreuse du Colombier is full of diversity with avenues, deep beds, a potager and a baroque pavilion. At certain times of the year there is a possibility to dine privately with the owners. Then there is the excitement of visiting the Latour-Marliac Nursery which supplied Monet with his famous water lilies for Giverny. The gardens of Marqueysac are one of Frances finest enchanting swirl of box hedges set high above the Dordogne river offering fabulous views to Castle Beynac, Castelnaud and La Roque Gageac. It is a beautiful location for a picnic before returning to Sarlat.

Difficulty: Easy! Just flow with the currents and steer your canoe. Stop to swim and have lunch along the way at pretty pebble beaches or riverside cafes.
